Small Double vs Double Bed: Which Size is Best?

One of the most common dilemmas for smaller UK bedrooms is choosing between a Small Double (4ft) and a standard Double (4ft6).

Is the 6-inch difference really that noticeable? And can two people sleep comfortably in a Small Double? Let’s compare them.

Double Bed Dimensions

- Small Double (Three Quarter): 120cm wide x 190cm long.

- Standard Double: 135cm wide x 190cm long.

1. For One Person. If this is for a teenager, a student, or a single adult, the Small Double is often the smarter choice. It feels significantly more spacious than a Single bed (luxury for one person!) but leaves you more floor space in the room for a desk or wardrobe.

2. For Couples Here is the honest truth: A Small Double is a ‘cosy squeeze’ for two adults. Is it fine for occasional use (like a guest room), but not every night, it might be a struggle.

- A Standard Double gives each person 67.5cm of width.

- A Small Double gives each person only 60cm of width.

If you are a couple, we highly recommend squeezing in a Standard Double if the room allows.

Assessing Your Room: Get a tape measure and mark out the footprint on the floor.

If a Standard Double leaves you less than 50cm of walking space around the sides, the room will feel cramped. In this case, downsizing to a Small Double might actually make the bedroom look and feel better.

Still not sure? We have both sizes on display at our World of Beds showrooms. Come and stand next to them (or lie on them!) to see just how much difference those 6 inches make.
