One of the most common questions we get from customers after a few months is: "My mattress has a dip where I sleep – is it faulty?"
In most cases, the answer is no. This is called settlement, and it's completely normal. Just like a new pair of leather shoes moulds to your feet, your mattress fillings settle under your body weight.
However, to ensure this settlement happens evenly and doesn't turn into an uncomfortable sag, you need a rotation routine.
Turn vs. Rotate: What is the Difference? First, check the label on your mattress.
- Turnable (Double-Sided): These have fillings on both sides of the spring unit. You need to flip them over (so the bottom becomes the top) and rotate them end-to-end.
- Non-Turn (Single-Sided): These have all the comfort layers on the top. You should never flip these over, as the underside is often just a non-slip base fabric. You only need to rotate them head-to-toe.
The Recommended Mattress Rotation Schedule
For a Brand New Mattress (The ‘Breaking-In’ Period) The first few months are crucial. The fillings are fresh and need to be settled evenly.
Frequency: Once a week for the first 3 months. Action: If it’s turnable, alternate between flipping it over one week and rotating it end-to-end the next.
For a Settled Mattress (3 Months+) Once the initial settlement has occurred, you can relax the schedule. Frequency: Once a month (or at least once every season).
Tip: Use the seasons as a reminder. Rotate when spring, summer, etc. starts.
Why Is It So Important?
- Prevents Dips: By moving the mattress, you ensure you aren't sleeping on the exact same spot every night. This allows the fillings in the "used" area to recover while you sleep on a fresher section.
- Protects the Springs: If you always sit on the edge of the bed to put on your socks in the exact same spot, those springs will wear out faster. Rotating shares the load.
- Warranty Compliance: Many manufacturers list rotation as a condition of their guarantee. Failure to do so could invalidate your cover.
How to Do It Safely, Mattresses can be heavy!
- Handles are for positioning, not lifting: The fabric handles on the side are designed to help you nudge the mattress into place. They are rarely strong enough to carry the full weight of the mattress.
- Get Help: Don't risk your back. Always ask someone to help you pivot the mattress.
- Clear the Area: Move bedside lamps and breakable ornaments before you start swinging a Super King mattress around!
Is your mattress too heavy to turn? If you struggle with lifting, consider asking us about ‘No-Turn’ options next time you visit World of Beds. These are designed with special support layers so they never need flipping, just rotating!
